David Smeulders holds an MSc in Aerospace Engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (TUD), and a PhD in Applied Physics from Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands (TU/e). His PhD thesis work is entitled “wave propgation in saturated and partially saturated porous media”, supervised by prof. Vossers and prof. van Dongen. Between 1992 and 2010 he was assistant/associate professor at the Applied Earth Science and Civil Engineering departments at TUD, where he was also scientific director of the Geotechnology Laboratory (2007-2010).


In 2010 he was appointed full professor at the Mechanical Engineering Department at TU/e, and since 2012 he chairs the Energy Technology group as the successor of prof. van Steenhoven. In 1998 he was visting professor at the Laboratoire d’Acoustique de l’Université du Maine in Le Mans (France) with prof. Lafarge and prof. Allard, in 2000 visiting professor at the Ben-Gurion University (Israel) with prof. Sorek, and from 2007-2010 guest lecturer at ETH Zurich (Switserland). He is also a member of the board of project leaders of the Dutch research school JMBC, guest editor of Transport in Porous Media (2010-2012), member of the international scientific committee of the Biot conference (2002 and 2005), member of the Dutch national ‘topsector’ board TKI EnerGO, member of the Dutch national ‘topsector’ board TKI Gas, scientific director of the Eindhoven Energy Institute EEI, and (co)-author of more than 100 scientific publications.He is a member of ASA (Acoustical Society of America), SPE (Society of Petroleum Engineers), SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), SEG (Society of Exploration Geophysicists), EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers), and board member of the DPS (Dutch Petrophysical Society).
